1. Scene Overview

Memento is confused story describe a man with anterograde amnesia which renders his brain unable to store new memories. During the opening

credits, it is shown that Leonard kills Teddy for the rape and murder of his wife based on information provided by Natalie.

This film is often used to show the distinction between plot a

nd story. The film's events unfold in two separate, alternating narratives — one in color, and the other in black and white. The black and white sections are told in chronological order, showing Leonard conversing with an anonymous phone caller in a motel room. Leonard's investigation is

depicted in color sequences that are in reverse chronological order. As each sequence begins,

the audience is unaware of the preceding events, just lik

e Leonard, thereby giving the viewer a sense of his confusion. By the film's end whe

n the two narratives converge we understand the investigation and the events that lead up to Teddy's death.

The scene is in color, Natalie tangle with Leonard, because Leonard no wants to kill Dodd for Natalie. Formally, She has not been is good, story to have puzzled the audience.

Shot size: This is a mid close shot throughout even as the character moves about.

Mise-en-scene: Interior, cinema setting, Natalie’s arm

Sounds: The sound in this shot is no music just Natalie’s voice.

She’s very angry.

Music: No music in this scene.

Color: It is color scene in this area.

Lighting: The lighting in this shot is very low key. In the beginning of this area, character is draw the curtains when she came in.

Character Movement: Natalie’s arm movement within this shot is the main focus. She is going to find pens and hide pens in her bag.

Character Relationship: Within this sequence, Natalie has prepared to puzzle whit L

eonard and Leonard has know nothing.

Editing style: This sequence has three shots. All of shots focus on Natalie’s arm. This is show the character is plan to divulge herself.

Subtext: All of information that Natalie is not good guy in this story. She never want to help Leonard and she just use Leonard.


Shot 2: 1:14:02-1:14:05











Shot size: This is a mid shot throughout even as the character moves about.

Mise-en-scene: Interior, cinema setting, Natalie’s busto.

Sounds: Natalie very furious and insulted Leonard.

Music: No music.

Color: It is color scene in this area.

Lighting: It is lighter than before, Natalie turn about the body and face to Leonard.

Character Movement: Natalie’s arm movement within this shot again. She shaking arm to show us she’s not happy.

Character Relationship: Within this sequence, Natalie has puzzle whit Leonard and she want to enrage Leonard, but she do not care.

Editing style: This sequence has two shots. Focus on Natalie’s face and her sharking arm. The camera is immovable.

Subtext: The same to shot 1.

Shot size: Mid close shot

Mise-en-scene: Interior, cinema setting, Leonard’s face and Natalie’s face. They are falling-out because Natalie want to Leonard kill Dodd for her, but Leonard do not understand and he do not want to kill someone for money.

Sounds: No music in background. The dialog about characters.

Music: No music.

Color: It is color scene.

Lighting: Same above.

Character Movement: In the beginning, Leonard set on the sofa, than he stand up face to Natalie to talk. He’s unhappy with Natalie’s word. But Natalie not wanna be friendly yet.

Character Relationship: Natalie know Leonard’s sick from beginning to end. So she do not scare exposure herself. She can say whatever she want. That is her lines too.

Editing style: This sequence has many shots and camera remove

from the list.

Subtext: Natalie never be friend with Leonard, just always for her benefit.


Shot 4: 1:14:40-1:15:06






Shot size: This is a close shot. Focus on Leonard face.

Mise-en-scene: Interior, cinema setting, Leonard face.

Sounds: The sound in this shot is no music just Natalie’s voice.

She knows Leonard will find pen but she has been hide all.

Music Color Lighting: Same above.

Character Movement: Leonard throughout of all body want to find a pen. He looks like very fidget.

Editing style: Camera remove from the list. Focus on characters face.

Subtext: Leonard will lose memory as usual.
