Movie Review: Adventureland

Adventureland (2009)
Directed by Greg Mottola
Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Martin Starr, Matt Bush

Adventureland looked like one of those movies that I would HATE to watch. I saw the trailer at the movies when I went to watch Twilight: New Moon (As you know, I hate Twilight now... I loved the books.. But the movies really KILLED vampires for me) and I thought, "Ohh great! It's the Twilight chick in another movie! This is going to suck!"

But... I stopped being so hateful... Because Dray gets too carried away sometimes with hating things... And I thought I'd give Adventureland a shot. And hey - It wasn't that bad. If you have seen Zombieland and Superbad, then this movie is for you.

Adventureland is the name for a theme park in a small village called Pittsburgh, part of Pennsylvania, where teenagers and other kids can work during Summer break. It has a highschool lunch-time feel to it, with a mix of different characters that you either hate or love.

Sure, it's another teenage loser love story with alot of "boner" jokes and "sack whacks", but it has a change from the usual heroes and characters you see in common teenage films. The main character James Brennan, played by Jesse Eisenberg (Zombieland) yet again does an amazing job at acting "casual", and plays the role of a nerdy virgin seeking a "hot chick" to "meet his needs" quite perfectly. His best friend Frigo, played by Matt Bush, is annoyingly funny, and he appears now and then in the movie by punching James in the balls when you least expect it. Emily, played by Kristen Stewart (Twilight), does amaze me alot in this movie. She is so naturally punk, that it is hard NOT to fall in love with her style. She can pull off sexy and geeky at the same time! So you will enjoy watching her in this.

The movie is set in the 80's, which certainly had the "retro" feel to it. Lou Reed, pot smoking, giant frizzball hair and moustache's all appear quite frequently. If you are an 80's lover, then you will enjoy this film quite a lot.

So to cut this short - This comedy will either make you laugh or make you sick. In my opinion, the director did a great job at retelling a common teenage story in a fresh and exciting way- In Adventureland. There are ups and downs, and plenty of bumpy rides. This may also be a great film to watch while stoned, but that's entirely up to you. But all I got to say is - Just fasten your seatbelts and enjoy the ride.

Hmm..I've seen this movie too. I liked it so much I got the soundtrack...which I listened to on the weekend when I went book-shopping at Dymocks. Such a cool soundtrack...or maybe I was just enjoying being at the bookstore.
