Scene Analysis

The Hangover

11 June 2009

SCENE OVERVIEW

Two days before his wedding, Doug and three friends drive to Las Vegas for a wild and memorable stag party. In fact, when the three groomsmen wake up the next morning, they can't remember a thing; nor can they find Doug. With little time to spare, the three hazy pals try to re-trace their steps and find Doug so they can get him back to Los Angeles in time to walk down the aisle.

The scene in which I will explore is that

They are all in the car and heading to Las Vegas. They are having a conversation about Poker. Alan is talking about counting cards in poker and calls Rain man a RITARD, then Stu asks him what, then he replays again by saying RETARD. and Doug corrects the term retard. After that the car is going and there’ll be a view of Las Vegas between the beginning of the scene and when they ended up at hotel before they had a mad night.

SHOT ANALYSIS

Shot 1

Shot Size: This is a medium shot as it related to the next scene.

Sound: The sound effect in this shot is a song which comes on, and Doug corrects the term retard. A song comes on right before Doug speaks.

Doug Billings: Either way, you gotta be super smart to count cards, buddy, okay?
Alan Garner: Oh really?
Doug Billings: It's not easy.
Alan Garner: Okay, well maybe we should tell that to Rain Man, because he practically bankrupted a casino, and he was a ri-tard.
Stu Price: A what?
Alan Garner: He was a ri-tard.
Doug Billings: [pauses to figure out what Alan was saying] *RE*tard.

Shot 2

Shot Size: This is a medium shot in order to see the guy behind him.

Camera Movement: there’s no camera movement only a few movements of those two characters.

Shot 3 Shot4

Shot Size: Those 2 pictures are an Extreme long shot.

Camera Movement: There is no camera movement in order to skip this scene to the next part. I think it is because the car is going that why there is no camera movement.

Lens Used: I guess, It was a normal lens was being used for this

Shot. As we can see it clearly

Color Usage: The colors are pretty normal I believe that there’s no color added in it and it was quite neutral.

Shot 5

Shot Size: This is a POV shot in order to see what car are they driving.

Music is still on from the shot 4.

Shot 6

Shot Size: This is an Extreme long shot as well comparing to shot 3 and 4 you will pretty much see the time has been changed to night time and that tells us how long the Road-trip was.

Shot 7

Shot Size: This is a long shot.

Music is off from now as they ended up at the hotel and about to book the room.

Shot 8

After learning the hotel room they had reserved only had 2 beds

Stu Price:Phil, we're not even going to be in the room. It's one night, we can share beds. It's no big deal.

Shot Size: This is a medium shot because we can probably see those 3 guys just half of it.

Lens Used: I guess, It was a normal lens was being used for this

Shot. But you can pretty much see how it blurs in the Background.

Camera Movement: No camera movement.

Color Usage: I do not think they added any color for this scene.

Alan Garner: Uh, if we're sharing beds, I'm bunking with Phil. You cool with that?

Shot Size: This is a medium shot.

Lens Used: same as the scene above.

Phil Wenneck: No, I'm not cool with that

Shot Size: This is a medium shot.

Camera Movement: No camera movement.

Color Usage: The colors are quite neutral and normal as well. I think they did not add any colors. And I do not think that they used any light with this scene too.
