i. Scene Overview

Duration: 00:18:59 – 00:19:30

Lost In Translation is the second movie of Sophia Coppola. The story is about a love story between two Americans staying in Tokyo.

Charlotte(Scarlett Johansson) with her husband on a business trip in Tokyo Japan but her husband put his everything on his work, he doesn’t care about her. Then she met Bob Harris(Bill Mrray), a movie star who is in Japan for a few days to shoot a wine commercial. Their relationship is fueled by their feelings of displacement in the strange world of Japan.

The scene in which I will explore is Charlotte is walking around in the streets and malls of Tokyo alone and she looks like she’s lost.

ii. Shot Analysis
Mise-en scene: Exterior scene, it’s on the bustling street of Tokyo and there’s lots of people on the street. The main character is Charlotte, she wanders the bustling street and malls.

Colors: The color on this scene is grey with little bit blue, because it’s cloudy and just after rainy, some people still holding umbrellas. The director use the color and choose the scene in a cloudy day I think she wants to express the main character Charlotte is “lost” within into a strange city, especially the situation she has which is her husband doesn’t care about her.

Lighting: Natural light, cloudy.

Sound: The background sound is a woman on loudspeaker speaking Japanese with the piano music.

Contrasting areas: This scene is almost shot the main surrounding of the street, and the main character stands in the middle of group people and walks through the street, some parts the camera focus the main character and make the rest people vaguely. She’s American with blond hair, so that’s also much easier compared with her and Japanese people who are around her.

Dialogue: N/A

Character Movement:

00:18:59 - 00:19:05 Charlotte stands on the street and waites for the traffic light.
00:19:06 - 00:19:11 Charlotte walks through the street.
00:19:12 - 00:19:17 Charlotte walks through the street.
00:19:18 - 00:19:25 Charlotte walks through the street and also look around.
00:19:26 - 00:19:30 Charlotte walks through the street and also look around.

Transitions: The transitions in the scene are all “jump cut”, the camera jumps different angles of the main character who is walking through the street and also jump between the main character with group people and the buildings.
